Exhibition Statement
"My Boy" was first published in 1971. Created by the late renowned Hong Kong cartoonist Wong Sze Ma, the comic quickly became a beloved classic that captured the hearts of readers across generations. The story revolves around the innocent and playful "My Boy" and his witty and humorous father, "Kai Yeh", depicting their daily lives and heartwarming interactions. Through simple yet evocative black-and-white four-panel comics, Wong Sze Ma masterfully illustrated the essence of middle-class family life in Hong Kong. With minimal text, the comic transcended language and cultural barriers, conveying emotions in a pure and relatable way - bringing smiles to both adults and children alike.
Alongside other iconic Hong Kong comics like “Old Master Q” and “Miss 13 Dots”, “My Boy” is regarded as one of the pioneers of story-driven comics in Hong Kong, laying the foundation for the city's vibrant comic culture and profoundly influencing the development of newspaper comic strips in subsequent years.
Touch Gallery is proud to have its debut collaboration with Fly With Us for the exhibition "My Boy's Happy Era," a tribute to this timeless classic. The exhibition features the treasured manuscripts of Wong Sze Ma and invites over 20 local artists inspired by "My Boy" to contribute their own creations, including Jan Lamb, Eric Kot, Gigi Leung, Li Chi Tak, Joel Chu, Wilson Shieh, Yeung Hok Tak, Siu Hak, Lai Tat Tat Wing, Alex Chan, Alion Yeo, Man Tsang, Cuson Lo, Pen So, b.wing, Paul Lung, Steven Choi, Don Mak, John Ho, Prodip Leung and Bonnie Pang. By reinterpreting “My Boy” in their own unique styles and language, these artists will be honouring Wong Sze Ma’s legacy while promoting Hong Kong’s original comic culture to the world.
